How technology is changing blindness: 6 talks on how those who can’t see can drive cars, take photographs and more

When Ron McCallum was a child, he loved story time. But he was sad not to be able to read a book on his own. It was the 1940s, and McCallum was blind since birth. As his mom told him, “You can’t feel the pictures, and you can’t feel the print on the page.”

“Little did I know that I would be part of a technological revolution that would make that dream come true,” says McCallum, a labor law scholar, in this incredibly sweet talk given at TEDxSydney. “Computers have changed the lives of us all in this room and around the world, but I think they’ve changed the lives of we blind people more than any other group.”

In this talk, McCallum takes us on a tour of the people and technology that allowed him to read — from those who transcribed into braille to the maker of the first blind computer with speech synthesizer, to the inventor behind the Kurzweil reader that scan books and reads them aloud. It’s a fascinating look at something sighted people tend to take for granted.

McCallum certainly has a point — technological innovation has brought some incredible changes for the blind. Below, TED and TEDx talks on more innovations for those who can’t see, some available now and some in the works.

Dennis Hong: Making a car for blind drivers
Much ado has been made about Google’s self-driving car. But Dennis Hong’s creation is a little different — it’s a car which allows non-sighted drivers to get behind the wheel, determine their route and speed, and stay safe with non-visual interfaces. “It’s a vehicle where a blind person can make active decisions and drive,” explains Hong in this fascinating talk from TED2011.

Sumit Dagar: Smartphones for the visually impaired
Most smartphones have glass surfaces — not exactly great if you rely on touch for information. So TED Fellow Sumit Dagar is working on a prototype of a smartphone based on a braille reader. This phone, still in development, will use different surfaces to denote function and will display information via braille. It also allows for braille texting, and will even pull up tactile maps. Perhaps the coolest, though—this phone will be able to scan any text and convert it into braille. And convert photos into feelable outlines.

Bob Lee: How I teach photography to the blind
Photography doesn’t seem like a likely hobby for people with impaired sight. At TEDxSingapore, photojournalist Bob Lee shares how he blindfolded himself to figure out techniques for teaching a five-week photography course for the blind. The key: using sound and tactile cues, plus the auto-functions on today’s smart cameras.

Sheila Nirenberg: A prosthetic eye to treat blindness
Neuroscientist Sheila Nirenberg is working on a technology not just to improve the everyday lives of those without sight — but to give them the ability to see, in the case that they should they want it. At TEDMED 2011, Nirenberg explains her creation — a prosthetic eye that captures images and sends them directly to the brain, by hooking into the optic nerve.

Anthony Dipin Vas: Haptic feedback shoes for the blind
In this incredible video — an ad rather than a TED Talk — a young man walks to school, a young woman strolls outdoors, and an old man navigates stairs. All three are blind. Rather than a cane or seeing eye dog, they are being guided by haptic feedback shoes. These shoes, called “La Chal” and created by TED Fellow Anthony Vipin Das, use GPS technology and vibrations to let their wearers know when to turn, lift their feet and stop to avoid a hazard. Ewa Marcinek: Cinema for the blind
Ewa Marcinek has a fascinating vision — a movie theater where the blind, who rely on audio description to understand movies, and the sighted, who rely on visuals, can watch movies together without going mad. At TEDxWroclaw, Marcinek explains this unique challenge, and how her team has solved it.

Growing, changing from year to year: Steven Addis at TED2012

Marketing and brand strategist Steven Addis turns up to show the 15 most treasured photographs in his collection. But these are not the highly produced shots you might expect from one who works in visual communications. Instead, they are the father-daughter snapshots he started as a unwitting project when his child was born. Every year on the same day he heads to the same intersection in New York to ask a stranger to shoot a portrait of him holding his daughter. The series is both funny (at 15, she’s pretty tall now) and moving, while the project, he says, is a cherished, anticipated time. It’s a “way for us to freeze time for one week in October, and to reflect on our times and how we change from year to year, not just physically but in every way.” Touching.

New TED Book asks: can changing how we teach make our kids smarter, more creative?

Ten years ago, educator Sugata Mitra and his colleagues cracked open a hole in a wall bordering an urban slum in New Delhi, installed a networked PC, and left it there for the local children to freely explore. What they quickly saw in their ‘Hole in the Wall’ experiment was that kids from one of the most desperately poor areas of the world could, without instruction, quickly learn how the PC operated. The children also freely collaborated, exploring the world of high-tech online connectivity with ease. The experiment (which provided the inspiration for the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire) was the dawning of Mitra’s introduction to self-organized learning, and it would shape the next decade of his research. Beyond the Hole in the Wall: Discover the Power of Self-Organized Learning is an important update to Mitra’s groundbreaking work, and offers new research and ideas that show how self-directed learning can make kids smarter and more creative. Mitra provides step-by-step instruction on how to integrate it into any classroom. and the book includes a foreword by Nicholas Negroponte, founder of both MIT’s Media Lab and the One Laptop per Child Association.. Beyond The Hole in the Wall offers important lessons that could reshape our schools and reinvigorate our educational system. We recently spoke with Mitra about his ideas.

What is self-organized learning?
In most schools, we measure children on what they know. By and large, they have to memorize the content of whatever test is coming up. Because measuring the results of rote learning is easy, rote prevails. What kids know is just not important in comparison with whether they can think.

Self-organized learning is a process where children in groups take on a topic or question which they then research using the Internet. While doing it, they have myriad discussions with each other that deepen their understanding of the answer. Along the way, there is no adult supervision or guidance of any sort.

How is this form of learning better?
Experiments show that children in unsupervised groups are capable of answering questions many years ahead of the material they’re learning in school. In fact, they seem to enjoy the absence of adult supervision, and they are very confident of finding the right answer. Ultimately, they retain the learning effortlessly and for years, much longer than what we see with rote memorization of facts and figures.

What are the barriers that stand in the way of its widespread adoption?
The existing Victorian system of education was created to mass-produce identical human beings, mainly to serve an aristocracy, and, in modern times, an industrial elite. Governments find it difficult to move away from this model, because it has worked. But in a tech-driven knowledge economy this method is not needed anymore, and it will not serve us. But too often we see that teachers and educational administrators feel threatened by self-organized learning. They, therefore, think it is not learning at all.

Does the idea of self-organized learning work better with today’s child, who is often highly wired and making a wide range of online choices each day?
Yes, it does. Right now, we have a generation of children 16 years old or younger who have never known a world without many of the connecting technologies that we take for granted and rely on heavily. How do these devices affect, and even improve, how we absorb information? Self-organized learning would not work at all without the Internet. Educationists have suggested this type of instruction as a method for years, but the resources were not there until recently. Now, with the Internet, we have the means and the capabilities to watch self-organized learning flourish. It’s a very exciting time.

The Secret Rule of Changing Anything

I’ve learned a lot about changing habits over the years, and have taught thousands of people how to do it.

The hardest habits to change, by far, are the ones people can’t seem to control. They want to change, but can’t seem to find the “willpower” (a term I don’t believe in).

For me, some of the things that seemed out of my control: smoking, eating junk food, overeating during social occasions, procrastination, anger, patience, negative thoughts.

I learned one little secret that allowed me to change it all:

When you are aware, you can change it.

OK, don’t roll your eyes and stop reading yet. That secret might seem obvious to some, or too simplistic. So let’s go a bit deeper.

When we have urges to eat something we know is bad for us, we often give in. But is it that simple? The truth is that our mind is actually rationalizing why we should just eat that cake, why it’s too hard to not eat it, why it isn’t that bad to eat it. It asks why we’re putting ourselves through pain, why can’t we let ourselves just live, and don’t we deserve that treat?

All of this happens without our noticing, usually. It’s quiet, in the background of our consciousness, but it’s there. And it’s incredibly powerful. It’s even more powerful when we’re not aware it’s happening.

It beats us all the time — not just with eating, but with anything we try to do and end up quitting, caving in, doing it despite our best efforts.

How can we defeat this powerful force — our own mind?

Awareness is the key. It’s the start.

1. Start by becoming aware. Become an observer. Start listening to your self talk, observe what your mind does. Pay attention. It’s happening all the time. Meditation helps with this. I also learned through running — by not taking along an iPod, I run in silence, and have nothing to do but watch nature and listen to my mind.

2. Don’t act. Your mind will urge you to eat that cake (“Just a bite!”) or smoke that cigarette or stop running or procrastinate. Listen to what your mind is saying, but don’t act on those instructions. Just sit still (mentally) and watch and listen.

3. Let it pass. The urge to smoke, eat, procrastinate, or quit running … it will pass. It’s temporary. Usually it only lasts a minute or two. Breathe, and let it pass.

4. Beat the rationalizations. You can actively argue with your mind. When it says, “One little bite won’t hurt!”, you should point to your gut and say, “Yeah, that’s what you said all those other times, and now I’m fat!” When it says, “Why are you putting yourself through this pain?”, you should say, “It’s painful to be unhealthy, and it’s only painful to avoid the cake if you look at it as a sacrifice — instead, it can be a joy to embrace healthy and delicious foods, and fitness!”

There are lots of times when “willpower” fails us. These are the times we need to become aware of our minds.

When we are aware, we can change it. This is a small secret, but it’s life changing. It changed my life, because I can now change anything. I watch, and I wait, and I beat it. You can too.
